DESCRIPTION: This week we continue our chat with cinematographers Adrian Peng Correia (“Love Life,” “Ramy”) and Andy Rydzewski (“PEN15,” “Dollface”), who analyze the look of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise. This week Andy argues that the first two films are more playful than later entries (we disagree), we talk about J.J.’s growth as a filmmaker following “M:I-3,” and we discuss Robert Elswit’s style for “Ghost Protocol” and “Rogue Nation.” Released March 11th, 2022.
SHOW NOTES: In this episode Andy talks about how the first two movies in the franchise weren’t afraid to get weird and wacky. For example De Palma’s use of POV shots in the first movie...
Or John Woo’s use of slow motion and dissolves in “M:I-2”...
Charles also brings up this shot from “M:I-2” as an example of Woo doing inventive things with the camera...
Adrian talks about the scope of “Ghost Protocol,” exemplified in that first IMAX shot at the Burj Khalifa...
Charles brings up this amazing whip pan in “Ghost Protocol” when Benji reveals some bad news...
Also this shot in “Fallout” where Ethan’s POV backs up into a shot of him as he considers leaving...
We also talk about this awesome shot in “M:I-3”...
We also discussed how Tom Hooper’s wide angle lens close-ups are the complete opposite of the long lens close-ups of “M:I-3.” Here are some of Hooper’s close-ups in “Les Misérables,” which feature a lot of the background and make the faces rounder...
Compare that with the long lens close-ups of “M:I-3,” which flatten out the faces and limit the amount of background you can see...
